CVE-2026-0300
A buffer overflow vulnerability in the User-ID™ Authentication Portal (aka Captive Portal) service of Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS software allows an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code with root privileges on the PA-Series and VM-Series firewalls by sending specially crafted packets. The risk of this issue is greatly reduced if you secure access to the User-ID™ Authentication Portal per the best practice guidelines https://knowledgebase.paloaltonetworks.com/KCSArticleDetail by restricting access to only trusted internal IP addresses. Prisma Access, Cloud NGFW and Panorama appliances are not impacted by this vulnerability.
do firstApply mitigations per vendor instructions, follow applicable BOD 22-01 guidance for cloud services, or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable. Until the vendor releases an official fix, the following workaround should be implemented: - Restrict User-ID Authentication Portal access to only trusted zones. - Disable User-ID Authentication Portal if not required. 5/13/2026: Palo Alto has released a variety of patches. If these are relevant to your environment, please apply the designated patch.
Can a WAF block it? No. The vulnerability is triggered by specially crafted packets sent to the User-ID Authentication Portal service, which is not described as HTTP-based. Therefore, the attack does not use HTTP requests and cannot be filtered by a web application firewall.

Is CVE-2026-0300 being exploited?
Yes. CVE-2026-0300 appears in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, which means exploitation in the wild has been confirmed and reported. Treat it as active rather than theoretical, and patch it ahead of higher-scoring vulnerabilities that carry no exploitation evidence.
How severe is CVE-2026-0300?
CVE-2026-0300 is rated Critical with a CVSS score of 9.8. Severity describes how bad exploitation would be, not how likely it is: pair it with exploitation evidence before deciding what to patch first.
Is there a patch for CVE-2026-0300?
Yes. A fix has been recorded for CVE-2026-0300. The vendor advisory is the authority on the exact fixed version — apply it from there rather than from a summary.
What does CVE-2026-0300 affect?
CVE-2026-0300 affects paloaltonetworks:pan-os, siemens:ruggedcom_ape1808_firmware. Confirm the exact affected versions against the vendor advisory before deciding you are exposed.
Exploitation status reflects CISA's KEV catalog as we last synced it. Check the catalog directly.

- affected>= 10.2.0 and < 10.2.18-h6
As published in the CVE Program record. A version outside these ranges is not a statement that it is unaffected — vendors sometimes understate a range, and distribution-backported builds carry upstream numbers that do not reflect what was patched into them.
