An Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor vulnerability [CWE-200] vulnerability in Fortinet FortiOS 7.6.0 through 7.6.1, FortiOS 7.4.0 through 7.4.6, FortiOS 7.2 all versions, FortiOS 7.0 all versions, FortiOS 6.4 all versions may allow a remote unauthenticated attacker to bypass the patch developed for the symbolic link persistency mechanism observed in some post-exploit cases, via crafted HTTP requests. An attacker would need first to have compromised the product via another vulnerability, at filesystem level.

do firstApply mitigations in accordance with vendor instructions, ensuring compliance with CISA’s BOD 26-04 Prioritizing Security Updates Based on Risk (see URL in Notes) guidance and CISA’s “Forensics Triage Requirements” (see URL in Notes). Follow applicable BOD 26-04 guidance for cloud services or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable. Stakeholders are responsible for evaluating each asset's internet exposure and ensuring adherence to BOD 26-04 patching guidelines.

triage
server-sideruntimeWAF can block: noAV · networkCWE-200· Information Exposure

Can a WAF block it? No. The vulnerability is exploited via crafted HTTP requests, but the attacker must have already compromised the product at the filesystem level through another vulnerability. The malicious requests likely appear normal, so a web application firewall cannot reliably distinguish them from legitimate traffic.

common questions

Is CVE-2025-68686 being exploited?

Yes. CVE-2025-68686 appears in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, which means exploitation in the wild has been confirmed and reported. Treat it as active rather than theoretical, and patch it ahead of higher-scoring vulnerabilities that carry no exploitation evidence.

How severe is CVE-2025-68686?

CVE-2025-68686 is rated Medium with a CVSS score of 5.9. Severity describes how bad exploitation would be, not how likely it is: pair it with exploitation evidence before deciding what to patch first.

Is there a patch for CVE-2025-68686?

Yes. A fix has been recorded for CVE-2025-68686. The vendor advisory is the authority on the exact fixed version — apply it from there rather than from a summary.

What does CVE-2025-68686 affect?

CVE-2025-68686 affects fortinet:fortios. Confirm the exact affected versions against the vendor advisory before deciding you are exposed.
