CVE-2022-23227
NUUO NVRmini2 through 3.11 allows an unauthenticated attacker to upload an encrypted TAR archive, which can be abused to add arbitrary users because of the lack of handle_import_user.php authentication. When combined with another flaw (CVE-2011-5325), it is possible to overwrite arbitrary files under the web root and achieve code execution as root.
do firstThe impacted product is end-of-life (EoL) and/or end-of-service (EoS). Users should discontinue utilization of the product.
Can a WAF block it? Partly. The attack involves uploading a specially crafted encrypted TAR archive via an HTTP request to a specific endpoint that lacks authentication, which a WAF can detect by matching the upload to handle_import_user.php with unusual file content. A WAF rule can match POST request to handle_import_user.php with an encrypted TAR archive upload. No tracked WAF vendor has published a rule for this CVE yet, so you would write it yourself.
What a custom rule would match: POST request to handle_import_user.php with an encrypted TAR archive upload
